The Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) hosted a registration event at Lakeland College in Vermilion on May 7. Registry Development Coordinator, Sarah Kaup said, “We are now making it more accessible for people to register by travelling to smaller communities to assist people with their applications in the afternoon and evenings. One thing registering for Métis citizenship allows people is pride in their culture! A lot of people can find connections to family or land when completing their family tree. ” The MNA will continue to bring cultural enrichment and life skills programs to the area including firearms safety and soon to be first aid free of charge to Métis youth. There will be youth camps province wide throughout the summer. Registered Métis citizens can find housing or post secondary funding as well as assistance from entrepreneurial affiliates through the MNA. “I am excited to be getting programs going so that youth in the area can learn more about their background,” said Regional Youth Coordinator - Region 2, Sarah Johnson. She also noted that in Bonnyville they will be hosting a finger-weaving course on June 2, and a coat-repurposing class on June 22. For details you can call 780-826-7483.
