Celebrating Ukrainian New Year’s, Malanka was held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 13.

A lavish Ukrainian meal, a selection of festive Ukrainian dances, and a live and silent auction were held at the event.

“We were so excited to see everyone perform,” said instructor, Elizabeth Zee.

According to Jason Stelmaschuk, Ukrainian Cultural Association president, the Samotsvit dancers shared some new ideas this year. From toddlers to adults, full energy and colourful costumes filled the stage; even a sword dance was performed.

“We are extremely grateful for the community support from families and businesses in the area; it is what keeps Malanka growing stronger each year,” said Stelmaschuk.

Guests enjoyed celebrating different aspects of their heritage while visiting, and joined in the community dance staying late into the evening.
