FCSS Celebrates 50 Years

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) celebrated 50 years in Vermilion at the Regional Centre on May 15. Chair, Darla Yonkman, emceed the event, and FCSS Coordinator, Carol Coleman, shared interesting facts about the organization. Currently, they are partnering with other organizations to address substance abuse, mental health issues and depression, homelessness, affordable housing, and senior in-home supports. In 1969, the group began with a $421.24 budget, and by 1990 had grown to fund $70,140.00 locally. In 2019, they reached another milestone budgeting $102,667.00. “Fortunately the Town of Vermilion decided to keep funding for social programming. It has been a privilege to work with so many different programs. The key things have been the people willing to adapt to change, and the agencies who continue to do the work. Margaret Mead said, ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’ Thank you for being partners in prevention,” said Carol Coleman.
