A Tiny Robot Duck With Big Ideas

When people think about artificial intelligence, they often picture chatbots, computer programs or maybe even humanoid robots from science fiction. But one of the newest examples of advanced tech is a lot smaller, and a lot quirkier, than that.
It is called Microduck, a tiny biped robot created by Pollen Robotics in partnership with Hugging Face. Standing about 25 centimetres tall and weighing less than 800 grams, the little robot is designed to walk, sit, crouch, get back up after a fall and even pick up objects with its articulated beak. It also includes 15 motors, a camera, a depth sensor and two IMUs, which help it understand movement and balance. Pre-orders opened Aug. 27 at a starting price of $399 US before taxes and shipping.
On the surface, it looks a bit playful, and that is part of the point. The creators say the duck shape came naturally from the robot’s proportions, beak and waddling movement. They wanted something approachable and fun, but still clearly a real robotics platform underneath.
What makes Microduck interesting is not just how it looks, but what it is meant to do. Unlike some small desktop robots designed mainly for interaction, Microduck was built around action. Its main purpose is to help people learn how AI can be trained to move in the real world. The company describes it as a platform for “AI that acts,” rather than simply AI that interacts.
That training starts in simulation. Microduck’s behaviours are first taught in a physics simulator, then transferred onto the real robot. From there, users can test, adjust, retrain and deploy new behaviours again. In simple terms, it gives developers, students and hobbyists a way to experiment with reinforcement learning and physical robotics without needing a major lab or a giant research budget
That smaller size matters. The company says learning movement can be messy, especially when a robot is trying, failing and trying again. A large robot falling over can be expensive or even dangerous. A tiny one landing on the floor is a much easier problem to deal with. That makes Microduck more practical for homes, classrooms and small workspaces, while also making robotics feel a little less intimidating.
The robot is also open source, which is a big part of its appeal. Pollen says the software development kit, simulation and full reinforcement learning training stack are all publicly available, meaning users can read the code, retrain the robot and build on the system themselves. The company says Microduck comes with seven trained moves out of the box, but users are encouraged to teach it new tricks and share those behaviours with the community.
For everyday readers, a tiny robot duck may sound more amusing than important, but it points to a much bigger shift in technology. Artificial intelligence is moving beyond screens and into machines that can move, react and learn from the physical world. Microduck is small, but the ideas behind it are not.
