Despite its name, competitors don’t actually have to be married. In most wife carrying competitions, teammates simply need to meet the minimum age requirements, making the event open to spouses, fiancés, friends and other willing partners.

The sport traces its roots to Sonkajärvi, Finland, where the World Wife Carrying Championship has been held annually since the early 1990s. While the origins are often linked to local folklore, the modern competition has grown into an internationally recognized event, with championships now taking place in several countries, including Canada.

Teams race against the clock over a course featuring obstacles such as hay bales, sand and a water hazard. Although several carrying techniques are permitted, many competitors choose the popular Estonian carry, where the carried partner hangs upside down with their legs wrapped over the carrier’s shoulders. The technique may look unusual, but it helps keep the weight balanced and allows competitors to move quickly through the course.

While the competition is filled with laughter, it also demands strength, endurance, balance and communication. Success depends on teamwork, as both competitors must work together to navigate the course as efficiently as possible.

One of the event’s best-known traditions is the prize. Following the international format, winning teams often receive prizes based on the carried partner’s weight, with awards commonly including their weight in beer and additional cash prizes, adding another light-hearted element to the competition.
