Community support was on full display during the annual Heritage Day Barbecue hosted by Cornerstone Co-op Gas Bar in Vermilion, with this year’s event raising $1,102.76 for the Vermilion Heritage Museum.
The barbecue was held July 28 under beautiful summer skies, welcoming community residents and visitors to stop by for Cheese burgers, hamburgers, hotdogs and a cold drink while supporting a piece of Vermilion’s history.
Volunteers from the Vermilion Heritage Museum were also on hand throughout the event, helping with the barbecue and visiting with those who stopped by.
On Aug. 7, Cornerstone Co-op Gas Bar Manager Dominic Hickey officially presented the proceeds from the fundraiser to museum representative Jean Muir.
Muir said the museum is extremely grateful for the donation, which will be directed toward repairs and ongoing maintenance of the museum building.
“We are incredibly thankful to Cornerstone Co-op and to everyone in the community who stopped by and supported the barbecue,” said Muir. “Maintaining a historic building takes a great deal of work, especially since we had a flood and the floors were damaged, and we need new lighting. Donations like this help us continue caring for the museum so that Vermilion’s history can be preserved and shared with generations to come.”
Hickey said Cornerstone Co-op was pleased to once again host the annual fundraiser and see the community come together in support of the museum.
“The Heritage Day Barbecue is something we are always happy to host because it gives us an opportunity to give back to the community while supporting an organization that preserves Vermilion’s story,” said Hickey. “The museum plays an important role in keeping our local history alive, and the success of this year’s barbecue really comes down to the residents and visitors who came out and supported it.”
The $1,102.76 raised demonstrates how a simple summer barbecue, backed by strong community support, can make a meaningful contribution to preserving an important part of Vermilion’s heritage.
