Crop Diagnostic Day Brings Agricultural Learning Into The Field

Farmers, agronomists, students and agricultural industry professionals gathered at the Lakeland College crop plots on Thursday, July 16, for Alberta Crop Diagnostic Day.

Lakeland College co-hosted the free event alongside Alberta Grains, Alberta Pulse Growers and Alberta Canola Producers, bringing experts from across the province together to share current research, practical advice and the latest advances in crop management.

Rather than learning from inside a classroom, participants had the opportunity to examine crop conditions firsthand, take part in field demonstrations and speak directly with researchers and industry specialists.

Sessions throughout the day covered pulse and canola agronomy, the importance of water quality when spraying, straw harvest compared to straw retention, Richardson’s ground squirrel control and insect pest management in canola.

The hands-on format allowed participants to ask questions and gain practical information that could be applied on their own farms or when advising producers throughout the growing season.

Events such as Alberta Crop Diagnostic Day help connect current agricultural research with the producers and crop advisers who put that knowledge into practice. They also provide an opportunity for those working throughout the agriculture industry to share experiences, discuss current growing conditions and learn from one another in the field.
