A little blustery Fall weather didn’t stop Vermilion’s first responders from coming together to support the community ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend.

Representatives from the Vermilion RCMP, Vermilion Fire and Rescue, Alberta Sheriffs and Emergency Medical Services were stationed outside Cornerstone Co-op on Friday, collecting non-perishable food and other needed items for the Vermilion Food Bank.

With Thanksgiving approaching and residents making their way to the grocery store to prepare for the holiday weekend, organizers hoped the increased traffic would provide an opportunity to collect as many donations as possible for local individuals and families in need.

Sgt. Ken Shamblaw of the Vermilion RCMP Detachment said the timing of the drive was intentional, with Friday expected to be a busy shopping day leading into the Thanksgiving weekend.

“The drive itself is intended to help fill the food bank. As you know, the demand is year-round, so we are trying to maximize the collection effort on days that should be busy at the store,” said Shamblaw. “This is just one of several drives that will be done throughout my term here.”

While Thanksgiving is often a time when food banks receive increased attention, the need for assistance does not end with the holiday season. Food banks rely on community donations throughout the year to help keep their shelves stocked and ensure support is available when local residents need it.

Friday’s collection also offered residents a chance to support the food bank while meeting some of the first responders who serve the community in a different capacity each day.

Despite the chilly fall weather, first responders remained outside the store collecting donations and encouraging shoppers to contribute what they could.
