Here we are at the end of the year, the changing of the numbers AD, nearing the end of page 12 of the 2025 calendar. At first, I was so glad to think that this year was ending because it held a very sad loss in my family, but with only a few days left in the year I realized, I would have missed so much wishing the year away. In the rush to close out what is difficult, it’s easy to overlook the experiences that positively color the year. We were moved with unexpected kindness; friendships deepened, and new connections were formed. In our personal lives we continued to visit the mountain parks, gardening and watching the most lovely flowers and plants grow, sing and play upbeat music, ride horseback across the prairies with the most beautiful views checking cattle and fencelines, paddling down the river, camping and fishing, attending a family wedding and family reunion, enjoying our wonderful “sunny Alberta” days, and writing stories. We did all this because God gives us the spirit of resilience, sometimes He has to carry us, but His hope is ever-present, no matter how challenging life is.

I make no New Years resolutions; truth is I have never followed them through. They started out as good intentions, or sometimes just a joke. Most of my resolutions faded away long before the snow melted (especially “weight loss” and “being organized” (you get the picture!)). There’s something optimistic/expectant about the New Year though. It offers a sense of renewal and a chance to start fresh. My serious thoughts about setting resolutions simply reflects the hope of changing something in my life that makes me better. Even though I missed the mark badly sometimes, it still is my good intention to be the best version of myself. It’s a lifelong work in progress! I go to God for that kind of help. Having said that, I’m glad God’s not done with me yet!

I have met some of you, my dear readers. Knowing that my stories have resonated with you means more to me than words can express. Your compliments and encouragement have uplifted me and inspired me to continue writing. I appreciated everything you said to me and I meant everything I said to you. Thank you for being part of this journey with me and I look forward to sharing many more stories. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Vermilion Voice who print my stories weekly. It is a privilege to work with you.

As we step into another year, may it be filled with good health, warmth, laughter, and new adventures. Here’s to fresh beginnings, cherished memories, and stories yet to be written. Thank you again for being part of this readership. Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful year ahead!

With gratitude,

Doreen Flewell Klatt
