The spirit of the season came alive on November 12 as the Scott Woods Christmas Hoedown lit up the Wainwright Communiplex Theatre with a night of toe-tapping music, laughter, and holiday joy. Presented by McLeod Music Productions, the two-hour show drew a full house eager to experience one of Canada’s most entertaining holiday traditions.

Led by Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods, affectionately known as “The Flippin’ Fiddler,” the performance blended high-energy fiddle tunes, heartwarming Christmas classics, and dazzling step dancing with plenty of good-natured humour. True to his reputation, Woods wowed the crowd with his signature trick fiddling routines, spinning, creating makeshift bows, and even playing while walking on a barrel, all while maintaining flawless musical precision. A sixth-generation fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, his charisma and showmanship brought smiles to every corner of the theatre.

Sharing the stage was an all-star lineup of musicians and performers. Champion fiddler Kendra Norris enchanted the audience with her blend of classical skill and country charm and outfit changes, while guitar virtuoso Steve Piticco impressed with his lightning-fast picking and distinctive “Tele sound.” Adding to the evening’s rhythm and excitement, Champion step dancer Leo Stock delivered electrifying routines that had the audience clapping along, his boundless energy filling the room with festive cheer.

The show also featured special guests Gary and Nadine Boles, whose soulful harmonies and musicianship brought a touch of warmth and nostalgia to the stage. Nadine’s beautiful voice carried throughout the theatre during her renditions of classic Christmas carols performances so moving they brought members of the audience to tears. The harmonies, jokes, and interactions on stage created heartfelt moments that perfectly complemented the show’s holiday spirit.

Beyond the music, the evening offered a rare level of connection between performers and audience. The entire orchestra was down-to-earth, friendly, and eager to make the night special, posing for selfies, signing autographs, and chatting with fans long after the final bow. Their discography was available for purchase, with a show special offering four CDs for the price of three, making it easy for families to take a piece of the magic home.

Adding an artistic touch to the event, original artwork created by Kendra and her friend Jennifer was also available. Each piece carries a story, one inspired by a song written by Scott for Kendra’s daughter, another reflecting the beauty of her wedding day, and even a generational piece honouring the family’s six generations of fiddling tradition. The artwork added an intimate glimpse into the heart and heritage behind the performers, resonating deeply with those who stopped to admire it.

The Scott Woods Christmas Hoedown offered something for everyone. The blend of musical mastery, heartfelt storytelling, creativity, and community connection made for an unforgettable evening. Audience members left the theatre with smiles on their faces and the joyful sounds of fiddles and Christmas bells still ringing in their hearts.

As one of the most entertaining events to usher in the holiday season, the Scott Woods Christmas Hoedown proved once again why it remains a beloved Canadian tradition. The Christmas Hoedown show has several dates available, and they will be back again in the Spring. www.scottwoods.ca
