SPARK Foundation Encourages Community To Paint The Town Purple
The SPARK Foundation of Lloydminster is encouraging residents and businesses to help turn the city purple from November 1 to 7 as part of Family Violence Prevention Month.
The annual Paint the Town Purple campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness about family violence, show support for survivors and remind those experiencing abuse that they are not alone.
Purple represents courage, survival and hope, and throughout the week, the Foundation hopes to see the colour displayed across Lloydminster as a visible reminder that family violence is an issue that affects communities of all sizes.
Businesses and residents are encouraged to participate by lighting their buildings or homes in purple, decorating windows and storefronts, displaying awareness materials or simply wearing purple. Participants can also share photos of their displays on social media using #PaintTheTownPurple or send them to the Foundation.
While the colourful displays are a way to catch people’s attention, the message behind the campaign is much more serious. Family violence can take many forms, including physical, emotional, verbal and financial abuse, and it is not always visible to those outside the situation.
Throughout November, the SPARK Foundation will also be hosting several educational opportunities, beginning with a presentation at the Lloydminster Public Library on November 2. The session will introduce the Foundation’s programs and services, including emergency shelter, second-stage housing and support for parents and families affected by trauma.
On November 9, a presentation focusing on recognizing and responding to elder abuse will take place, followed by an information booth at Lakeland College on November 17. The month will conclude with a youth-focused program, Coming Out on Your Terms: Safety, Support and Self-Discovery, on November 25.
The SPARK Foundation provides emergency shelter, outreach services, housing support and educational programs to women, children and youth facing crisis. Its work extends beyond Lloydminster, providing resources and support to individuals and families throughout the surrounding region.
Residents are encouraged to take part in Paint the Town Purple, whether through a business display, a purple light at home or a conversation about the importance of healthy, safe relationships.
