Thanksgiving Thoughts

Thanksgiving has been celebrated in Canada since the 1700’s according to Google and Wikipedia. In 1957 the Canadian Parliament officially proclaimed the second Monday in October the official Thanksgiving Day “a Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed”.
While sharing turkey and celebrating Thanksgiving with friends and family this year, someone asked a simple but meaningful question: “In one sentence, what are you thankful for?”
It would be easy to answer with the blessings right in front of me; family and friends, a good harvest, good health, and a home to live in. These are precious gifts, and I am very grateful for each one.
But as I reflected more deeply, my heart returned to one of my favourite scriptures. Philippians 4: 6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” NKJ
Those words ask much of us, especially in uncertain times. Yet they also hold such a beautiful promise. When we bring everything to God with thankful hearts, His peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds. Thank You, God, for that peace, and for holding us steady when the world around us feels anything but steady.
Our homes, our work, and the people we love can bring comfort and a sense of safety. But beyond those familiar places, the troubles of the world can easily stir fear, frustration, and worry. Whatever we may be carrying, this scripture reminds us that peace is still possible. We can find it in prayer, in gratitude, and in trusting that God is near.
As I attempt to live this out in my own life, it is also my heartfelt wish for each of you, my friends. May your hearts be filled with gratitude, your minds be guarded by peace, and your homes be warmed by love. Happy Thanksgiving!
