The well-loved and long-standing Community Closet celebrated its grand re-opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 16 at its new location in downtown Vermilion. Among those in attendance were Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Aiyana Thompson and Town of Vermilion Economic Development Officer Mary Lee Prior, who joined volunteers and community members to mark the occasion.

“First and foremost, I want to take a moment to thank our incredible team of volunteers. Your hard work, dedication, and countless hours have made this move and grand opening possible. You are truly the heart of The Community Closet,” said Margaret McCormack.

Affectionately known as “The Closet,” the non-profit organization moved in early September from its previous location at 4840 50 Avenue to its new larger space at 4911 50 Avenue. The move was prompted by the increasing number of donations and the growing variety of gently used items the store offers.

Established in 1964, The Community Closet has been a cornerstone of Vermilion for over six decades. It provides affordable, gently used items including men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, footwear, household goods, games, and puzzles. Operated entirely by dedicated volunteers, the store donates all proceeds—after covering operating costs—back into the community.

“We also want to thank the entire community for your continued support-through your generous donations, your time, and your loyalty as shoppers. It’s because of you that we’ve been able to give back to Vermilion for the past 60 years, supporting a variety of local charities, healthcare initiatives, youth programs, and cultural events,” added McCormack.” As we open the doors to this new space, our hope is to continue that legacy-to serve, to give, and to make a difference in our community for another 60 years.”

Over the years, The Closet has made numerous contributions to local organizations. In 2024, the society donated $22,000 to various community groups, followed by another $9,000 distributed among five local organizations in March of 2025.

The Community Closet’s new location is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Staff kindly remind donors not to leave donated items outside the building when the store is closed.

The grand re-opening marks an exciting new chapter for The Community Closet, continuing its long tradition of giving back and supporting Vermilion’s community spirit.
