Getting settled in a new community comes with plenty of questions, from finding activities for the kids to knowing where to turn for support. Welcome Home Day aimed to make that transition a little easier for Lloydminster’s newest residents.

Held at Bud Miller All Seasons Park on Saturday, October 3, the free event was organized by the City of Lloydminster’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and the Local Immigration Partnership. It was open to newcomers, new neighbours and anyone interested in learning more about the community.

The afternoon’s planned activities included a free community barbecue, games for all ages and cultural performances. Community information booths were also part of the program, bringing local organizations and service providers together to help residents learn what was available close to home.

Having those resources in one place was intended to give people an opportunity to ask questions, explore programs and make connections as they found their footing in Lloydminster. Alongside the practical information, the event’s focus was on helping new residents get to know the community and the people who call it home.

Welcome Home Day was an extension of FCSS’s free Welcome Home Program, which supports individuals and families as they settle into the city. The program covers a broad range of everyday needs, including household utilities and internet, education and child care, transportation, employment, recreation and community support.

It also helps residents learn about local events, shopping and dining, and navigate life in Lloydminster’s bi-provincial community. For someone unfamiliar with the area, knowing where to start can make the process of settling in more manageable.
