Vermilion Town Council covered library funding, committee appointments, finances and future economic development during its regular meeting on Oct. 20.

Vermilion Public Library Director Stuart Paul’s presented the library’s 2027 funding request, which included plans to eliminate membership fees and hire a new part-time staff member.

Removing the fees would reduce financial barriers and bring Vermilion in line with the other four libraries in the County of Vermilion River. The additional staff position would help address operational demands and maintain consistent hours.

The library requested a Town contribution of $280,000 for 2027, an increase of $4,200 from the previous year. Its overall proposed budget totals $367,100.

Council also handled several organizational matters, including reappointing Councillor Kevin Martin as deputy mayor for another one-year term beginning Oct. 20.

The deputy mayor takes over the responsibilities of the mayor when the mayor is unavailable or if the position becomes vacant.

Council approved its updated list of committee, board and organizational appointments, along with the 2027 council and committee meeting schedule. Both lists are available on the Town of Vermilion website.

The Town’s third-quarter financial update was received as information. The report provided an overview of departmental budgets, capital projects and reserve balances as of Sept. 30. Financial reports will continue to be presented to council quarterly.

Council also received the completed Vermilion Retail Market and Gap Analysis. The report examined the community’s existing retail and service market, consumer spending patterns and the areas where local dollars are leaving the community.

The information will help the Town identify gaps in local shopping and services while looking at opportunities to attract new businesses, support existing ones and strengthen Vermilion’s role as a regional shopping and service centre.

Council then approved an application to the Northern and Regional Economic Development Program for the Vermilion Retention and Investment Attraction Asset Development Project.

If the application is successful, the project would support professional photography, promotional videos and publications showcasing Vermilion’s businesses, housing, amenities and quality of life.

The materials would be used across the Town’s website, social media, advertising and investment attraction efforts. The program may provide funding for up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs.

The project builds on feedback collected through more than a year of meetings and surveys with local businesses. It is intended to promote Vermilion, encourage people to shop locally and help attract new residents, businesses and investment to the community.
