McMinis & Company has changed ownership and is now J.M.H. Adams Professional Corporation Chartered Professional Accountants, owned and operated by Janet Adams, CPA, CA. effective January 4.

Adams grew up on a family grain farm near Kindersley, Saskatchewan, and obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

Adams and her husband Barry moved to Medicine Hat where Barry was involved in the family mixed farm and Janet began her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) career. According to her bio, Adams after articling and becoming a partner at the first CPA firm she worked at, Janet joined Burns, Valkenburg & Associates LLP (BVA) in 2003. She was a partner with BVA from 2007 to 2019. While at both firms, Janet assisted owner-managed businesses and not for profit agencies to reach their financial goals.

Adams has worked extensively with several for-profit industries including farming, professionals, construction, trucking, oil and gas servicing, retail, commercial and residential rental, investment or holding companies and trusts. She has serviced not for profit industries such as condominiums, extended care facilities, health-related agencies, tourism and community enhancement agencies. Adams has also presented at seminars on succession planning and business reorganization.

Although Adams currently resides in Medicine Hat she said she would regularly travel to work onsite and to meet clients in person and has grandfathered all the same great staff from McMinis & Company into her business operations.

Adams says she purchased McMinis & Company because it was a successful, stalwart business in the community and that it was a good business opportunity for her.

“I am only a phone call away whether I am onsite or offsite. I, as well as the other staff members, can work remotely whether we are living 10 minutes from Vermilion or elsewhere,” explained Adams.

Adams also plans on being a contributor to the Vermilion economy by purchasing local services, assisting non for-profit organizations in the community with subsidy program applications, as well as, joining the Vermilion Chamber.

Adams also went on to say that J.M.H. Adams Professional Corporation Chartered Professional Accountants will still offer all of the services that McMinis & Company used to plus others such as review engagement financial statements, Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), Canadian Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS), Canadian Emergency Business Account (CEBA) applications, Alberta Relaunch program applications, Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF) applications, Alberta Stabilize program for rodeo, sports, arts and other venue-based group applications, Succession planning and corporate reorganizations.

Adams is excited to be starting this new venture in Vermilion and servicing Vermilion and area residents.

“I look forward to applying my years of experience of performing audit, review, and notice to reader engagements and preparing corporate, personal and trust income tax returns to assist the residents of Vermilion and surrounding district,” said Adams.

When Janet is not working she enjoys yoga, going for walks, and watching local hockey.
