TD Canada Trust Green Initiative Flourishes

In a display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, TD Canada Trust once again brought TD Tree Days to Vermilion on September 12, with volunteers gathering at Lakeland College to help enhance the community’s green spaces.

The planting took place directly behind the Dairy Barn at Lakeland College, where volunteers came together beginning at 9 a.m. to plan t 121 trees. Approximately 30 volunteers had signed up ahead of the event, with additional 20 or so volunteers welcomed the morning of the tree plant ing day.

Representatives from Lakeland College, including Stacey Ruller (who gave the land acknowledgement for the group) and Paul Sayer, were also on hand for the event, working alongside TD representatives and community volunteers.

Volunteers were well taken care of throughout the morning. Tim Hortons donated coffee and hot chocolate, while the TD Vermilion branch supplied Timbits, water and other treats to keep participants fueled during the morning’s work.

Local restaurants were also approached to help provide lunch for the volunteers, with pizza arranged for the hardworking crew following the morning of planting. Zayn’s Diner Plus, Pizza Hut, Boston Pizza, Express Pizza and Nick’s Family Restaurant were among the local businesses supporting the event, demonstrating the community spirit that helps make initiatives such as TD Tree Days possible.

According to TD Vermilion Branch Manager Marlene Beattie, this is believed to be the 12th year TD has planted trees in Vermilion, with the first local TD Tree Days planting taking place in 2014.

Over the years, the initiative has helped add trees to local green spaces while bringing together TD employees, Lakeland College representatives and community volunteers with a common goal of improving the environment.

The TD Tree Days event goes beyond simply putting trees in the ground. It provides an opportunity for residents, businesses and organizations to work together on a project that will continue to benefit the community for years to come.

“This is our way of helping to ensure that Vermilion stays green,” said Beattie.
