Downtown Vermilion got into the Halloween spirit on Saturday, October 31, with the debut of Vermilion Boo-Levard, a new initiative bringing local businesses together to offer children a little extra trick-or-treating fun.

The idea was brought forward by Adam from Express Pizza, who took the initiative to organize the event and encourage downtown businesses to participate in the Halloween festivities.

Beginning at noon, young ghosts, goblins, witches, princesses and superheroes and every other costume you could imagine were invited to make their way through the downtown core, looking for special Boo-Levard signs identifying participating businesses where Halloween treats were waiting.

With temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, it was a chilly afternoon for trick-or-treating, but Vermilion children are no strangers to bundling up against the cool fall air, especially when candy is involved.

The first-year event offered families an opportunity to enjoy Halloween a little differently, while bringing people into the downtown core and encouraging connections between local businesses and the community.

What started as an idea from one local businessman became an opportunity for downtown businesses to work together to add something special to Halloween.

For the children, it meant another chance to show off their costumes and collect treats before heading out for the traditional evening trick-or-treating.

With its inaugural year complete, Vermilion Boo-Levard has the potential to become a new Halloween tradition, showing how a simple idea and a little community spirit can bring some extra fun to Vermilion.
