Sixteen teams competed in the Vermilion Curling Club’s second annual Open Bonspiel February 16–28. Last year’s bonspiel was unfortunately canceled due to losing the ice in January of 2023.
The Open Bonspiel concept allows for teams of all ages and skill levels to be competitive. There were many family teams entered in the bonspiel.
Tim DeRoo, Peyton DeRoo, Kera DeRoo, and Derb DeRoo came first in the A event. Doug McCrae, Cory Hemaur, Wayne Hemaur, and Joanne McCrae placed first in the B event. Adam Carter, Ryan Smith, Sean Stromberg, and Desmond Rowan came first in the C event.
Bonspiel organizer Stephen Dykstra did a fantastic job getting the spiel up and running. Although their team did not finish in the top of an event, they did win the Cornhole tournament! The “anything vintage” theme was a blast, allowing teams to recreate their “youth.” The Travis Gosior team won the prize for best outfit.
President of the Vermilion Curling Club Tim DeRoo would like to thank everyone for coming out and making the weekend a huge success. The club greatly appreciates the continued support of the local businesses and curling community.
