The Vermilion Elks Lodge is celebrating a remarkable milestone this year as it marks its 100th anniversary.
Founded on May 25, 1926, the Vermilion Elks have spent a century serving the community through volunteerism, fundraising, and charitable work. For 100 years, generations of members have dedicated their time and energy to making Vermilion a stronger and more connected community.
At the centre of that legacy stands the Elks Hall, a gathering place that has hosted thousands of weddings, funerals, anniversaries, meetings, fundraisers, and community celebrations. For many local families, the hall has been the backdrop for some of life’s most memorable moments.
The success of the organization has always been driven by its members. Over the past century, thousands of Elks have collectively contributed hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours maintaining the hall, organizing events, fundraising, and supporting local initiatives.
The Vermilion Elks have also provided significant support to minor sports, seniors’ groups, schools, and community organizations. In addition, they have proudly supported provincial and national Elks charities, extending their impact far beyond the local community.
Another long-standing contribution has been the operation of the Vermilion Farmers’ Market. For more than 50 years, the Elks have provided a venue for local producers, artisans, and businesses while helping strengthen community connections and support the local economy.
The Elks Hall itself reflects the dedication of generations of members. During the past 15 years, extensive renovations have been completed, including a new roof, replacement of the floor, foundation repairs, upgraded tables and chairs, a modern sound system, and improvements to the stage and wall systems. These projects have helped preserve one of Vermilion’s most important community facilities.
As the organization enters its second century, another major renovation project is underway. Planned improvements include the addition of an accessible washroom, modernization of existing washroom facilities, replacement of ceiling tiles, and installation of energy-efficient lighting throughout the hall. These upgrades will improve accessibility, comfort, and sustainability while ensuring the hall remains a welcoming gathering place for years to come.
While much has changed since 1926, the spirit of fellowship and service that defines the Elks has remained constant. The organization’s success is a testament to the dedication of the many members, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to its growth over the past century.
As the Vermilion Elks celebrate their centennial, they are honouring a proud history while continuing to invest in the future of the community. Residents interested in learning more about the hall renovation project, supporting the fundraising effort, renting the hall for personal or business functions, or finding information about the Vermilion Farmers’ Market can visit vermilionelks.ca.
One hundred years after its founding, the Vermilion Elks Lodge remains a powerful example of what can be accomplished when neighbours come together in service to their community.
