Pro Rodeo Draws Crowds In Marwayne

The 6th annual Marwayne rodeo showed that the rodeo way of life is alive and well when large crowds travelled from far and wide to watch the action this past weekend. Thirty-two bull riders in all competed at this year’s Professional Bull Riding (PBR) at the Marwayne Arena on April 7 and 8.

Marwayne PBR Champion Garrett Green rides Hookasaurus to a 84.5 score to win the event and $3865.29 prize money.

Some of the best riders in the world came to compete in the adrenaline pumping, unpredictable and captivating eight second ride in which legends are made.

Many riders hung on for the eight seconds and longer. After the qualified eight second ride, each rider received a score. Judges watched for control and ability of the rider to successfully counter the moves of the bull.

The star of the night was PBR Champion, Garrett Green. It was one of the biggest wins to date for the young cowboy aged 25.

The economy reflected slow signs of recovery as sponsorship prize money doubled from $5,000 last year to $10,000 this year.

Event organizer and promoter Justin Volz, who rode bulls himself in the past, said the PBR is great for smaller communities like Marwayne.

“With the Marwayne arena struggling in recent years, the PBR has been great for the economy of the local community; it brings in some world class athletes, many of whom have competed at the biggest rodeo competitions in Canada, including the Calgary Stampede and Canadian Finals Rodeo,” said Volz.

The Prairie Dogs got the crowd rockin after the rodeo showdown on Saturday and six local purebred beef producers auctioned off their bulls for good prices at the Battle of the Breeders on the night. Handmade buckles were given to the highest bidder and the producer.
