Twenty-six students from Lakeland College’s Emergency Services Technology Battalion 29 pushed themselves to the limit on June 14 as they successfully completed the 2026 Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge at Brookfield Place in Calgary.
The annual event brought firefighters and emergency service personnel from across Alberta and beyond together to tackle Calgary’s tallest tower in support of cancer care and firefighter wellness initiatives. Participants climbed 57 storeys and 1,370 stairs while wearing modified firefighter gear, including helmets, boots and breathing apparatus equipment.
For Battalion 29, the event represented far more than a physical challenge.
“Participating members in our program are extremely proud to represent Lakeland College and the Town of Vermilion as Battalion 29 of the Emergency Service Technician Diploma,” said John Hill and Kristian Petit on behalf of the group following the climb.
The Lakeland College team not only completed the demanding climb, but also far exceeded its fundraising expectations. Battalion 29 originally set a fundraising goal of $10,000 before friends, family, and community support quickly propelled the campaign past that mark. As of the event, the group had raised $21,594 and counting in support of Wellspring Alberta and firefighter wellness initiatives.
Proceeds from the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge help ensure Wellspring Alberta can continue providing programs and services to firefighters and all citizens living with cancer. A portion of the proceeds also supports the Firefighters Assistance Charitable Society (FACS), whose mission is to strengthen and empower the firefighter community through programs that enhance resilience and overall well-being.
The strong response reflected growing awareness surrounding the occupational cancer risks firefighters face throughout their careers. Organizers note that cancer remains one of the leading occupational hazards within the firefighting profession, making initiatives like the Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge especially meaningful.
