Lakeland College Open House Gives Future Students A Glimpse Of Campus Life

Excitement and curiosity filled the air at Lakeland College as prospective students, families and visitors explored the many educational and career opportunities available during the college’s annual Open House, held October 16 and 17 at its Lloydminster and Vermilion campuses.
The two-day event, held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, offered visitors an opportunity to look beyond program descriptions and experience firsthand what life as a Lakeland College student could be like.
With more than 50 programs to explore, there was plenty for visitors to discover as they toured facilities, spoke with instructors and current students, and asked questions about everything from admission requirements to career opportunities.
Dana Gard-Sweeney, supervisor of recruitment and enrolment at Lakeland College, described the Open House as an opportunity for visitors from across Canada to experience the hands-on education that prepares students for real-life careers.
Both campuses offered opportunities to explore Lakeland’s practical approach to education, giving prospective students a closer look at the classrooms, laboratories, shops and specialized training facilities where learning takes place.
Program areas featured during Open House included agricultural sciences, business, energy, environmental sciences, fire and emergency services, health and wellness, human services, interior design technology, trades and technology, and university transfer.
Depending on their areas of interest, visitors had opportunities to explore specialized learning environments, including the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland, the Energy Centre, and the Emergency Training Centre.
At the fire school, visitors had the opportunity to tour the training facilities, with the experience coinciding with the graduation of a fire training platoon on October 16.
Apprenticeship training was also highlighted, as students completed their apprenticeship examinations and helped run interactive activities in the shops, allowing prospective students to get involved and experience some of the practical skills taught in the trades programs.
Visitors also had the opportunity to tour the brand-new Bentley Building, home to Lakeland’s interior design and human services programs, offering a look at the college’s newest learning spaces.
The Open House also coincided with Lakeland’s Fall Classic Rodeo, taking place over the weekend, adding to the activities happening at the college.
Along with prospective students and their families, the event brought together industry representatives and Lakeland alumni, providing opportunities to connect with individuals familiar with the college and the career paths its programs can lead to.
For those still deciding on a career path, the event offered an opportunity to explore different programs, speak directly with instructors and gain a better understanding of the skills and training required in various fields.
Visitors were also able to connect with academic advisors and student services representatives to learn more about admission requirements, financial assistance, campus life and the supports available throughout their college experience.
Residence tours provided another glimpse into student life, while Lakeland swag, prizes and interactive activities added to the Open House experience.
Another benefit for prospective students was the opportunity to apply to eligible Lakeland credit programs free of charge while attending the event in person.
Ahead of the event, Gard-Sweeney emphasized the importance of allowing prospective students to experience the college for themselves.
“Open House gives future students the chance to experience Lakeland rather than just read about it,” said Gard-Sweeney. “They can meet the instructors they’ll learn from, see the labs, facilities and unique areas where that learning happens and ask the questions that matter to them.”
She added that visiting the campus can help students determine whether Lakeland is the right fit for their educational goals.
With a recent survey showing 96 per cent of Lakeland graduates are satisfied with their program and 99 per cent of employers are likely to hire a Lakeland graduate again, the college continues to emphasize practical education and career readiness.
For prospective students considering their next steps, the Open House provided an opportunity to explore their options, make connections and discover what Lakeland College has to offer.
