Shared Shelf Book Club Brings Readers Together At Vermilion Library
Book lovers looking for a relaxed place to talk about what they are reading can find just that at the Vermilion Public Library's Shared Shelf Book Club.
On October 22 the first meeting took place after a summer hiatus. The club brings readers together for an hour of conversation about books, the good ones, the not so good ones and everything in between. Rather than keeping the conversation strictly centred around one title, participants are encouraged to share what they are currently reading, talk about books they have loved and even discuss the ones they may not have enjoyed quite as much.
The next Shared Shelf Book Club meeting will take place Tuesday, November 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the library basement. For those unable to attend in person, there is also an option to join the discussion virtually.
The current suggested reading selection is The Paris Express by Emma Donoghue. The novel gives readers something in common to bring to the conversation, but the club leaves plenty of room to talk about other books and discover new authors, genres and titles through the recommendations of fellow readers.
Members also get a say in what lands on the Shared Shelf next. The library invites participants to vote on upcoming book selections, with the winning title announced at the next meeting. It gives readers a chance to have some fun choosing what the group will explore while introducing everyone to books they may not have picked up on their own.
Part of the appeal of a book club is simply having someone to talk books with. A great story can stick with a reader long after the final page, and sometimes half the fun is being able to share what you loved, what surprised you or what drove you a little crazy.
The Shared Shelf keeps that conversation casual and welcoming. There is no need to be a literary expert or have a long list of classics under your belt. Readers of all ages are welcome, whether they read every day, have recently found their way back to books or are simply looking for ideas for their next read.
Along with the book talk, refreshments and snacks will be provided, giving participants an opportunity to visit and connect with other readers in the community.
Those planning to attend virtually can preregister through the Vermilion Public Library website to receive a meeting link and information on books previously discussed by the club.
Whether you always have a book tucked into your bag, have a growing stack waiting beside the bed or are just looking for something new to read, the Shared Shelf Book Club offers a chance to pull up a chair, share a few opinions and perhaps leave with another title to add to the list.
