Over the month of September local school tied up their laces and headed out to support a long-running fundraising event, the Terry Fox Run.

On Friday September 11 Vermilion Elementary school spent the day learning in classes and in an assembly about Terry Fox and the difference even just one person can make. The students, staff, and some families participated in the schools Terry Fox Walk/Run and kept track of their laps until it started pouring rain.

Vice Principal Adrienne Joa noted that the school focused on raising awareness and helping their students learn more about Terry fox and his Marathon of hope.

“Classes read and discussed stories about Terry, and as a school, we watched videos and talked about the many reasons Terry is remembered as a hero. We explored what it means to be a hero and, importantly, what it means to have hope,” commented Joa.

While learning about Terry Fox, the students were also introduced to a Vermilion hometown hero who faced the same type of cancer that Terry had and who also had her leg amputated due to the disease.

“We also used the opportunity to learn about a hometown hero, Jolan Wong, Jolan has been a member of the Canadian Seated Volleyball Team since she was 18 years old. Her story helped our students see that Terry’s legacy continues to inspire people right here in our own community,” said Joa.

The students also learned about the incredible distance Terry travelled in the 9 months he spent out on the road, the adversities he had to face and the strength and determination he held within.

“The students also learned about the incredible distance Terry travelled each day during his Marathon of Hope. We calculated what that distance would look like if he were running from Vermilion and imagined just how far he travelled each day. One of our teachers shared photographs from her visit to the Terry Fox Memorial, giving students another personal connection to his story, she added.

After learning so much about Terry and the trial and tribulations he encountered the school headed outside to challenge themselves by completing as many laps as possible.

“As we ran, we reflected on Terry’s grit and determination. He kept running despite the challenges he face, and we are reminded that sometime, having grit simply means continuing to put one foot in front of the other, explained Joa.

On Monday September 21 staff and students of St. Jerome’s Catholic School jumped at the chance to head outside under beautiful sunny skies and summer like conditions to honour Terry Fox and continue his dream of bringing awareness Cancer research.

And on Friday September 25, teachers and students put on their shoes and tied up their laces to walk in honour of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. Students also brought a toonie on the day of the walk to be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation.
