In a delightful display of musical homage, Shelley Jones enchanted a crowd of 132 local jazz enthusiasts on February 1 with her performance of ‘A Touch of Cole’ at Lakeland College’s Alumni Hall Theatre.

The matinee concert, dedicated to the legendary Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie, unfolded as a gripping tribute. Backed by the seasoned expertise of guitarist Wes Yaciuk and bassist Wes Caswell, Jones graced the stage with warmth and charisma, delivering smooth renditions of classic Cole standards. The repertoire traversed the diverse landscapes of jazz, Latin rhythms, modern blues, and soul, captivating the audience throughout.

Hailing from Edmonton, the trio has garnered acclaim not only within the city but also beyond. Jones, whose musical journey began with a passion for rock, pop, and blues cover bands, discovered her affinity for jazz during her time as a student in Grant MacEwan’s vocal music program. Since then, she has established herself as a versatile vocalist, seamlessly transitioning between jazz ensembles, symphony orchestras, and popular music groups. Her authentic interpretation, vocal range, and unique stylings have positioned her as a sought-after artist among musicians and bands across Alberta.

Yaciuk’s illustrious four-decade career as a passionate performer precedes him, while Caswell’s tenure as head of the bass department at Grant MacEwan, coupled with his extensive production work for various artists, underscores his musical prowess.

Reflecting on the evening’s performance, Kerri Pulyblank expressed admiration for the caliber of musicianship on display, highlighting the exceptional talents in the performance.“It was a great jazz show with amazing musicians - pianist, base fiddle player, guitarist, drummer, and trumpet player ALL Extraordinaire!!! and all who have played for big names.” Pulyblank also lauded Jones, hailing her as a remarkably talented artist from nearby Innisfree, and noted that, “Tunes from Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong were enjoyed by all.”
