The Lt. Col. Craig Armoury Historical Society unveiled its inaugural Spring Fashion Gala on April 11 at the Regional Centre with an evening that shimmered with style, purpose, and unmistakable community spirit. The sold-out event drew a vibrant crowd, eager to indulge in an experience where fashion met philanthropy and heritage was honoured with grace.
As guests arrived, there was a palpable sense of anticipation in the air, the kind that accompanies an evening destined to linger in memory. President Don Henry opened the night with warmth and pride, welcoming attendees while weaving together the story of the historic armoury and the Society’s ongoing mission. His remarks carried both gratitude and a touch of humour, noting the remarkable range of auction offerings with a playful suggestion that one could assemble an entirely new woman from the treasures available, from manicures and pedicures to spa packages and massages.
The evening commenced with the March of the Sword and was held from six until 9 o’clock. The room transformed into a runway of springtime elegance. Under the poised guidance of emcee Michelle Nelson of Uniquely U Styles Ladies Wear, the fashion show unfolded as a seamless narrative of seasonal style. Collections from Uniquely U Styles Ladies Wear, Harbrook & Paisley, Journey Co Fashions, Branded Western Wear, and Burnt Rock Adventures came to life through a nervous but confident procession of models that moved with charm. Each ensemble told its own story, from playful children’s pieces to relaxed everyday wear, from polished western looks to attire designed for the spirit of outdoor adventure, with nearly 48 distinct outfits gracing the runway.
The experience extended beyond the runway, enveloping guests in an atmosphere of indulgence and delight. Cocktails prepared by Copper Cork paired beautifully with charcuterie boards sponsored by The Spa Spot and artfully prepared by The Old School Cheesery, inviting conversation and connection as the evening flowed. The silent auction, a cornerstone of the event’s success, captivated attendees with an impressive array of items, ranging from curated business offerings to a five-night camping experience at Jasper Gate Resort and RV, generously provided by Sharmon Smith.
Excitement reached a sparkling crescendo with the draw for a diamond necklace valued at $3,500. When Barb Snelgrove’s ticket number was announced, the room responded with a collective cheer, a moment that perfectly captured the evening’s joyful energy.
Inspired by Vermilion’s rich history of community events, the gala carried forward a legacy once championed by the Jaycees, reimagined for a new generation. The success of the evening was a testament to the unwavering support of local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. Throughout the night, Henry and co-organizer Bob Fisher expressed heartfelt appreciation for the many hands that brought the event to life, including the dedicated 20 EST students whose efforts ensured every detail was executed with care, from set-up and service to the seamless delivery of auction items and door prizes.
Beyond its elegance and celebration, the gala served a meaningful purpose. Funds raised will contribute directly to the preservation and enhancement of the historic armoury, a cherished space that continues to serve both as a gathering place for youth and organizations and as a tribute to the legacy of the 194th Battalion and its commanding officer, Lt. Col. W. C. Craig. Planned improvements to the heating system, roof, and basement, and indoor gun range will ensure the building remains both functional and accessible, sustaining its role at the heart of the community.
As the evening drew to a close, there was a shared sense that something special had been set in motion. With its seamless blend of style, history, and community connection, the Spring Fashion Gala has all the hallmarks of a cherished annual tradition, one that promises to return year after year with the same elegance, purpose, and vibrant spirit.
