There is always a certain kind of excitement that comes with recital season, and anyone who has attended knows it is about far more than just a performance. It is the reward after months of practice, discipline, and dedication. It is a community gathering to celebrate tradition, youth, and the joy of movement.

On April 25, the Lakeland College Alumni Theatre was filled with music, colour, and applause as the Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association hosted its annual year-end dance recital.

The much-anticipated event welcomed family members, friends, alumni, and community supporters who came together to celebrate the dancers and all the hard work they had put in throughout the season. From the youngest performers stepping onto the stage with bright eyes and nervous smiles, to experienced dancers moving with confidence and precision, the afternoon was a reflection of commitment and heart.

The recital opened with all dancers taking the stage for the traditional Pryvit welcome dance, setting the tone for a vibrant afternoon. It was a beautiful beginning, one that immediately filled the theatre with pride and excitement.

Throughout the program, the audience was treated to a variety of traditional Ukrainian dances, each showcasing its own regional style, rhythm, and story. Performances included the spirited Volyn, the lively Bukovynian, and a captivating Hutsul solo that highlighted both strength and grace.

The Transcarpathian dance brought the traditions of Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region to life, while the energetic Hutzul number had the crowd fully engaged. Adult dancers also took the stage for both the Transcarpathian and the always-popular Character Sword dance, a dramatic and crowd-pleasing performance that drew enthusiastic applause.

Character group dances were woven throughout the recital, adding variety, personality, and moments of fun that kept the audience smiling from start to finish.

One of the most meaningful moments of the afternoon came as this year’s graduates were recognized. Their years of dedication, countless rehearsals, and contributions to the group were honoured in front of the community that had watched them grow. It was a heartfelt reminder that dance organizations often become a second family, shaping young people far beyond the stage.

Events like this continue to serve as an important celebration of heritage and culture, while also building confidence, discipline, and lifelong friendships among dancers. The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association once again demonstrated how tradition can be kept alive through passion, hard work, and community support.

Donations were accepted at the door, and the strong turnout reflected just how valued this annual event has become. By the end of the afternoon, the theatre had been filled not only with music and movement, but with pride, connection, and appreciation for a tradition that continues to thrive.
