Vegreville was swept into an enchanting world of history and fantasy as the Vegreville Medieval Faire & Artisan Market returned July 10 to 12 at the Vegreville Agricultural Grounds. For three days, the grounds were transformed into a bustling medieval village filled with the clash of swords, Celtic music, costumed performers, and entertainment for all ages.
Inspired by the popularity of medieval-themed productions such as Game of Thrones and The Last Kingdom, the event originated in Calgary in 2019 and was brought to Vegreville by organizer Gail Stamp of LegendWorks Events Inc. With roots dating back to 2018, the faire has built a devoted following while celebrating medieval history, fantasy, and artisan craftsmanship.
Throughout the weekend, visitors enjoyed live jousting, armoured combat demonstrations, theatrical performances, and Viking battle reenactments that kept crowds gathered around the tournament field. Costumed performers wandered the grounds, sharing stories, posing for photos, and entertaining children and adults alike.
The Artisan Market featured handcrafted leather goods, chainmail jewellery, medieval-inspired décor, and fantasy-themed treasures. Vendors embraced the medieval atmosphere, making every booth part of the experience.
Among the weekend’s standout performers was Court Magician Lothar Malmberg, whose blend of illusion and storytelling captivated audiences with dramatic flair. Angus and Dolina also drew enthusiastic crowds with energetic medieval dance performances, inviting spectators to join in the fun with lively group dances.
Friday evening’s Grand Feast proved to be one of the weekend’s highlights, bringing guests together for a buffet banquet accompanied by live entertainment from Edmonton-based Celtic Frolic. The group’s energetic mix of traditional Celtic music and Balkan influences, along with return performances by Lothar Malmberg and Angus and Dolina, created an evening filled with music, magic, and celebration.
Families found plenty to enjoy with child-friendly jousting demonstrations, interactive crafts, and fantasy storytelling, while young knights and princesses explored the grounds in costume.
With nearby RV camping, convenient parking, and a welcoming atmosphere, the Vegreville Medieval Faire & Artisan Market once again delivered a memorable weekend celebrating history, creativity, and community spirit.
As the final cheers faded Sunday evening, visitors departed with handcrafted treasures, lasting memories, and stories worthy of their own medieval adventure.
