The Vermilion Allied Arts Council delivered a moving and memorable evening on November 8 as Billy Bishop Goes To War took to the stage at the Alumni Hall Theatre at Lakeland College. The performance brought audiences a powerful portrayal of one of Canada’s most celebrated war heroes.
Actor Damon Calderwood captivated the crowd with his portrayal of William Avery “Billy” Bishop, the famed Canadian flying ace of World War I. Through song, storytelling, and an emotional solo performance, Calderwood guided the audience through Bishop’s transformation from an uncertain young man to one of the nation’s most decorated military figures. The production balanced humour, vulnerability, and the gravity of wartime sacrifice, creating a heartfelt tribute that resonated strongly with those in attendance.
The Vermilion Allied Arts was also pleased to welcome members of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps of Vermilion to the event. The Cadets were on site prior to the performance to sell poppies and provide information about their organization, adding a meaningful connection to remembrance and community service on the eve of Remembrance Day.
The evening proved to be both engaging and reflective, reminding audiences of Bishop’s extraordinary achievements while honouring the broader legacy of Canadians who served in wartime. It was a standout performance in the Allied Arts season and left a lasting impression on all who attended.
