Christmas magic soared to new heights in Vermilion this year, thanks to a group of dedicated local organizations determined to ensure kids’ letters to Santa Claus were delivered and replied to, despite challenges posed by a Canada Post strike.
On December 15, the Vermilion River Flying Club, along with their cheerful helpers—A Cup of Tea Financial, Rusylvia Transport, and other volunteers—embarked on a mission to save the season’s most important mail. Gathering at A Cup of Tea Financial, the team dove into a festive flurry of activity, reading an impressive 168 letters written by students from the local playschool and Vermilion Elementary School’s grades 1 to 4. Once the letters were read, the next phase of the operation began: delivery!

Santa’s special letters were whisked away to the North Pole and back, a journey that managed to overcome the unexpected hiccup of the Vermilion Airport’s runway closure. But no closed runway could ground the determined crew’s holiday mission!
The crew who delivered the letters to Santa quickly learned that answering children’s heartfelt notes to Santa is no small task, as Santa ensured each letter included a personalized and positive message- while skillfully sidestepping any promise about specific wishlist items.
When the individual letters returned to Vermilion, Vermilion Elementary School Principal Sheila Doherty was eagerly awaiting their arrival. She promptly retrieved the precious cargo at the airport, ensuring the replies reached the excited young recipients, who had been eagerly anticipating word from the jolly man in red.
This heartwarming effort united local businesses and community members to deliver joy and Christmas magic to the children of Vermilion Elementary School. Together, they proved that even when obstacles arise, the holiday spirit is unstoppable!
Now that’s a Christmas story worth cheering for!
