For Brody Sunderland, this moment has been building over time, shaped by seasons of growth, quiet determination, and a steady commitment to improving his game.
The Kitscoty forward has signed a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Spokane Chiefs, marking an important step forward after being selected in the fourth round, 75th overall, in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. It is a milestone that reflects not only a strong season, but a player who has continued to develop in all areas of his game.
At 6’4”, Sunderland brings a noticeable physical presence, but it is the way his game is evolving within that frame that continues to draw attention. His speed, skill, and competitiveness have steadily progressed, creating a player who is becoming more confident and more complete each time he steps onto the ice. Spokane’s interest in Sunderland was built over time, with scouts noting his ability to improve as the season went on and his impact in meaningful moments.
That growth was evident this past season with the Lloydminster Lancers U18 AAA program, where Sunderland recorded 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 30 games. Beyond the numbers, he showed a stronger presence in key situations, contributing not just offensively, but in the overall pace and energy of the game.
His path to this point has not been without challenges. Growth spurts, injuries, and transitions between programs have all played a role in shaping both his ability and his mindset. Each experience has added another layer to his development, helping build a level of resilience that continues to show in how he approaches the game and prepares for what comes next.
Off the ice, Sunderland remains grounded in the community that helped support his journey. From early mornings at the rink to following his draft day surrounded by friends at school, the milestone carries a shared sense of pride for those who have been part of his path.
“I am very excited to be signing with the Spokane Chiefs and taking this step forward in my hockey career,” Sunderland said, while also taking time to thank the coaches, teammates, and family members who have supported him along the way.
He now joins a group of 2010-born prospects within the Chiefs organization, all working toward the same goal of earning a full-time role at the WHL level. Sunderland will be eligible to join Spokane as a full-time player during the 2026–27 season, giving him time to continue developing and building on the progress he has already made.
For Sunderland, the path forward remains unchanged, continue to improve, stay ready, and keep building toward the next step in a journey that is still just beginning.
