Little Cowpokes Take Over Vermilion Arena

Young rodeo competitors were back in the saddle in Vermilion last week as the Little Cowpokes Junior Rodeo Association brought two days of competition to the Lakeland College Equine Centre.

The rodeo was held August 20 and 21, giving young cowboys and cowgirls another opportunity to put their skills to the test while spending time with friends and families who share their love of rodeo.

Little Cowpokes has long been about more than winning a buckle. The junior rodeo association gives young competitors the chance to learn, improve and gain confidence in the arena, while also teaching the sportsmanship and responsibility that come along with rodeo.

Throughout the two days, competitors took part in a variety of events, including barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and team roping. For some, it was another chance to chase faster times and improve on a season of hard work, while for others, simply getting into the arena and completing a run was something to be proud of.

There is also a strong family side to Little Cowpokes. Behind nearly every young competitor is someone hauling horses, helping saddle, offering advice at the gate or cheering from the sidelines. Rodeo days can be long, but they are also where friendships are made and where many young competitors develop a love for the sport that stays with them for years.

Having the rodeo at Lakeland College also continued Vermilion’s strong connection to agriculture, horses and rodeo. The Equine Centre has hosted countless young competitors over the years and once again provided a place for the next generation to get some arena time.

By the end of the two days, there were plenty of runs, a few nerves, lots of encouragement and undoubtedly some stories for the trip home.
